Burma's Failed Cyber Revolution

by Tawtha

This analysis of the September 2007 failed rising in Burma may be of interest to our Burma watching regular travellers. It is not what you will find in the papers, and provides new, if rather depressing, insights on the current situation.

A Burma River Journey: A Handbook for Travellers

by Paul Strachan

Kiscadale Publications, Gartmore. First Edition 1997, 2nd Edition 1998.119 pages

This book is long out of print and its sections on recent political history now in need of updating. But the information on history, culture and the river stops remains as relevant as ever and there are usesful milage charts, lists of kings, glossary and bibliographies. Paul Strachan, the founder of Pandaw  Cruises, used to lead his groups round these places and despairing sometimes of the lack of information from local guides decided to write down all he knew of these river stops.  A Burma River Journey is here available as a free pdf  download and may be printed out and taken with you. The book is not available in Burma for censorship reasons but there is no problem carrying a print out in.

Tourism in Burma: Behind the Controversy

a talk at the Britain Burma Society 14th June 2006 by Paul Strachan
Addressing a packed house, Paul Strachan voices a number of concerns about the direction of tourism in Burma and indeed expresses doubts as to the long term benefits of the industry in a developing country like Burma. He examins  where the tourist dollars go and dispells the myth that the government is a beneficiary of tourism profits . Here downloadable as a pdf:

The Britain Burma Society

The Britain-Burma Society, with 360 members worldwide, is about friendship and understanding between the peoples of the two countries - and other nationalities can join in.  Most members have lived in Burma/Myanmar; all have fallen in love with it.  The society does not campaign politically.  It offers seven lectures a year in London, on many aspects of Burma's culture, history, daily life etc.  Its web site has more than 100 pages on Burma - pictures, books, festivals, etc. And a members-only area includes illustrated versions of many previous lectures.  Annual subscription: £8.00 ($14.95).
