Luxury small ship river cruises in Asia

Mrauk-U (Mrauk-Oo) is a former kingdom, which had its prime time during 1430-1785. Due to its location in the Bengal Bay, it was a major regional hub, backdoor to Burma and an important port. During the times of prosperity, the kings, ministers and common people built many pagodas and temples. Thanks to that a few hundred years later you’ll find here a huge collection of sacral buildings, which can be out-shined only by Pagan. The temples in Mrauk-U have been constructed from hewn stones instead of mud and bricks. The most important ones are Shite-thaung (The temple of 80,000 images of victory), Htukkanthein temple (Htukkanthein Ordination Hall), Koe-thaung temple (temple of 90,000 images) and Five Mahn pagodas.

It’s worth to combine an excursion to Mrauk-U with a short stay on a nearby Ngapali Beach.

Transfer to the airport after lunch for your flight to Akyab (Sittwe). Continue by boat (subject to availability) or car to Sittwe for about 6h through a mesmerising scenery of Arakan State. Dinner & Overnight at Mrauk-U Princess Resort.

Visit to the local market, Pisi Phaya, which offers a spectacular view over the temples, city walls with its gates and nearby farms. Explore Koe Thaung temple with its 90,000 Buddha images. Continue to Pharaouk, Mong Khong Shwe Du and Zina Manaung temples. See a traditional fan making place and a take look at the Lakse lake, the moat and water reservoir of the last palace of Mrauk Oo.

Awake early morning to capture a memorable sunrise over the panoramic view of Mrauk U from the top of the hill. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, seeing the sun coming over the hills. Afterwards return to your hotel for breakfast. After that, drive (45 minutes) to the jetty where you embark a small private boat to go upstream Lay Myo River. After nearly 3 hours of upstream cruising, your boat will reach the first chin village where only a few chin ladies with the tattooed faces remain. After the first village, your boat will float up a few miles to visit another village.

In the afternoon return to the resort by boat and car. Spend an afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Mrauk Oo Princess Resort.

Take a boat or car back to Akyab (Sittwe). Time permitting visit a local market, monastery and Sittwe. Transfer to Sittwe Airport for your flight back to Rangoon.
