Introduction
Burma’s South is one of the most interesting and picturesque areas of the country. Since the government’s permissions to visit are no longer required only since 2013, Karen & Mon states are still not touched by mass tourism. This programme will introduce you to all the major attractions of the area including, but not limited to the Golden Rock, Hpa-an caves and colonial Moulmein.
Day 1
Depart Rangoon, visit Htaukkyant Allied War Cemetery and travel to Kinpun. Here we visit one of Burma’s most sacred sites - the Golden Rock - a giant boulder balanced precariously on the edge of a cliff and covered in gold. Continue to Hpa-an for a four-night stay on bed and breakfast basis at the comfortable Hpa-an Lodge, set amid the most beautiful countryside.
Day 2
Full day of fascinating explorations in the Hpa-an area including a short boat ride on the Salween River, visit Kyauk Ka Latt Pagoda (also called the Water Lake Monastery), Lumbini Garden at the base of Mount Zwekabin, Saddan Cave Paya and Kawka Thaug Cave used as a working monastery. Overnight in Hpa-an Lodge.
Day 3
Drive to a moving Thanbyuzayat Cemetery (3h), where more than 3,000 allied servicemen are buried. Take a look at the western terminus of the Thailand–Burma Railway linking up with the pre-war coastal railway between Ye and Rangoon.
In the afternoon visit Moulmein - the first capital of the British Burma between 1826 and 1852. Moulmein is the setting of George Orwell's famous 1936 memoir Shooting an Elephant. Visit some royal monasteries and colonial churches. Drive back to Hpa-an lodge for overnight.
Day 4
Today we explore the beautiful Hpa-An area including the morning market. We continue to Kawgun cave whose rock face is decorated with many images of Buddha dating back to the 15th century A.D. Hanthawaddy period. Enjoy a walking tour of the scenic countryside and visit Shwe Yin Myaw Pagoda. Overnight at Hpa-an Lodge.
Day 5
Drive to Rangoon via Pegu - a very important Burmese trading town still unspoiled by mass tourism. Visit a local market, some pagodas and monasteries before coming to Sule Shangri-La Hotel for overnight.
Day 6
Transfer to Pandaw ship or the airport.
